Connecting your business full-time to the Internet is no longer an option. Having full time Internet access has become an assumed part of doing business, both for your own employees and for your business partners and customers. However, while this connection is a necessary component of your business, it can also be the single biggest point of exposure if proper attention isn't paid to protection and control of the connection.
Appropriate use of the Internet by your employees can no longer be assumed to be under control, it must be controlled both by your own "acceptable use" policy and backed up by specific content control through your Internet connection.
Intrusion protection is a constantly evolving practice, and must be maintained accordingly. Strategies for compromising systems are constantly changing. Companies that assume they are too small to be a target are mistaken. Any connection to the Internet has most likely be scanned regularly since it has been established, by persons who may be looking for something as benign as a place to store their own illicit information. Professionals who are required to understand the severity of this risk understand that every open Internet connection will be exploited at some point, no matter the size of the company using that connection.
Firewalls are the essential protection layer for every business that has an Internet connection, but they are not a "set it and forget it" appliance. As with any system, they require ongoing administration and maintenance. New patches must be applied as they are made available, log files must be monitored on an ongoing basis to identify and respond to new threats. However, as with most complex systems, you will probably struggle to manage this critical protection element without some help from technical professionals who work with these systems on a daily basis.
